Chalet Otto Description

Chalet Otto is an absolute bargain, because although it has plenty of space for eight guests in its four bedrooms and roomy sitting-dining room, we have priced it for six, since one bedroom is not to the same standard as the others. It is a bright and very roomy apartment on the third floor of our Comtes de Savoie building, with sunny views up Solaise, a log fire, sauna, balcony, ski lockers with boot warmers, wifi and even a lift.

The location is excellent, on a silent courtyard just back from the main road in the centre of Val d’Isère, literally paces from most of its restaurants, bars, ski schools and ski shops. The slopes are three to four minutes’ walk away, though unless you have extraordinarily forgiving ski boots (or those irritatingly comfy-looking snowboard boots), you’ll probably plump for the free and frequent Train Rouge ski buses, which stop just outside (two stops to the Rond-Point, three to the Funival).

Otto has three excellent bedrooms with en-suite shower-rooms and wcs. Room 1 has both a bath and a shower, which one might feel was ablution overkill, but is useful if your other half tends to monopolise the bath…

Room 4 is where you’ll put Aunt Agnes and Uncle Basil, or a child or two, because it is slightly smaller and doesn’t have a window – not that one often opens one’s windows at -20. It has an en-suite shower and a private loo just outside the bedroom door. Room 4 is ideal for a single person and adequate for two. Even when only five or six people come to Otto, Room 4 is often designated the snorer’s cabine! But the best thing about it is that it costs nothing.

The maximum number of guests we can accommodate in Chalet Otto is eight, plus a baby under 1.

There are two guest parking spaces under the building, which are available to those staying in this chalet and the other 5 YSE chalets in the building. They are sold on a first-come, first-served basis and cost £100 per car, per week. The car park was not really designed for Range Rovers and G-Wagons! They do fit in, but most of the time the driver will need help from a second person outside the car.

What you really want to know, of course, is exactly who is or was Otto? Count Otto the First was one of the early counts of the Savoie (1051-1057). It is not clear why he is called Otto the First, since there was never a second. Most of them were called Amadeus, which happens to be the name of our chalet upstairs from Chalet Otto.
