La Maison du Rocher Description

La Maison du Rocher is part of a lovely stone house in that little enclave of smart chalets on the left as you reach Val d’Isère proper from La Daille. This is the place you may have read about once in the Telegraph, in an article so enthusiastic people thought we had written it ourselves!

The building dates back to the 1620s, so its walls are deep and solid, its roof of granite slabs and whole trees robust enough to support the weight of Val d’Isère’s heavy snowfall.

The vast sitting room is one of those rooms that feel right, perhaps because of the log fire, the bottomless hand-made British sofas (with duck-down cushions, so guests can spend hours wallowing in them, and chalet staff can spend hours plumping them back up again!) or just the traditional stone walls and wood ceiling. And there is a separate dining room, where food is served which we defy any restaurant in Val d’Isère to match.

The five bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms are all individual, but warm, welcoming and very comfortable, well fitted-out with lights and cupboards. Bedrooms 3 and 4 have twin beds, which we can fit together to make into a 6ft double (please specify which you’d prefer when you book). Rooms 4 and 5 are split-level rooms, with the bathrooms below and the beds above, under the eaves. Room 4 is a twin and room 5 is a single but has a double bed and so can be for two but please note the bed is under low eaves!

La Maison du Rocher is perfectly situated in a large garden a minute’s walk above the main road, with bus stops in both directions a further minute. The Funival, the world’s fastest lift, is just one stop away, so guests are skiing in no time, yet the chalet is totally insulated from the sound of passing traffic of people.

On the ground floor is a sauna. If you really want to do the thing properly, you can make the short sprint through the front door, roll in the snow in the garden, beat yourself with larch branches (beware – they’re spiky!) and sprint back into the sauna. But most guests seem just to chastise their bodies with a glass or two of bubbly.

And next winter there will be a hot tub in the garden too!

La Maison du Rocher Prices

Prices are per chalet per week in sterling.

Our Winter 2023-24 prices are shown below, and Early Booking Winter 2024-25 prices below them. Holidays run from Sunday to Sunday. We have moved to whole-chalet pricing, with the exception of Chalet Les Chardons which is still priced per person. There are no discounts or supplements for groups, children, infants, extra beds or empty beds. The price shown in the grid is the price we charge for the chalet, including any optional extra beds if you choose to use them. The standard number of beds shown is, in our opinion, the optimum number, and optional extra beds may be a third bed in a room, beds on a mezzanine or in a room without a window, or even the other half of a double bed. Please read the chalet description carefully if you are using the extra bed(s).
