Ski hire

If you don’t have your own equipment, we recommend you buy your own boots but continue to hire skis. By renting, you can choose skis for the snow conditions, and swap mid-week if things change. You always have the latest models, while your own will soon be outdated. They are waxed and sharpened when you arrive, and you don't have to transport them to and from the Alps. We don’t charge for ski carriage, but we can’t say the same for some of our competitors! If you want to buy boots, they are best bought mid-week and custom-fitted over two or three days.

Don’t hire in Britain, hire in Val d’Isère. It has some of the best wintersports shops in Europe, and equipment tends to be similarly-priced as in the UK, but better.

YSE guests have a tendency to be independent-minded, so we have simply negotiated the best possible rates at the following shops, listed alphabetically, for you to choose between. See below for contact information and location.

The prices shown are for skis, boots and poles for six days for YSE guests only. They include insurance for loss, theft, breakage or irreparable damage. There will be more details and useful recent feedback on the transfer bus on your way to Val d’Isère.

WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU PRE-BOOK EQUIPMENT, INCLUDING HELMETS, FOR ANY CHILDREN TRAVELLING ON A MAIN SCHOOL HOLIDAY DATE. Contact any of the shops (not before December) saying that you are coming with YSE. For skis, the shop needs to be told the child’s height. For boots, just the foot size. Children will usually have to try on more than one pair of boots on arrival in the shop, but an advance order helps.

In the tall, white Portillo building, near Le Crêt, close to our chalets Bozzetto, La Grande Sassière, La Maison du Rocher, Le Vieux Crêt and La Croix. A small, very personal shop. No minibus service, but easy to walk from Bozzetto, and YSE's Land Rover can take you to and from the other chalets mentioned here.

LA POUDREUSE – Intersport (La Daille)

In the La Daille shopping arcade, a short walk or ski across the OK from our Chalets des Neiges, Pentes and Pistes, and also good for La Maison du Rocher, Le Vieux Crêt, La Croix and the Sassière chalets using their own Land Rover service. Very modern, spacious ski and boot hire area. Good and extensive, mostly new selection of skis and boots. Seldom crowded and open all day. Charming English speaking staff. No transport, so you have to carry your kit on your first and last evenings. On the other hand, with their door giving directly onto the piste, if you do need to make any changes during the week you can simply ski straight to the shop from your chalet or from the ski runs.

In the skiing epi-centre of the resort, on the ‘front de neige’ at the foot of the nursery slopes in the Grand Paradis building – Mattis Intersport is the longest-established of all our recommended ski shops. Providing the best-prepared skis in town has long been their raison d’être, and a brand new machine in their sizeable workshop helps them to realise this boast, and their skis really are a cut above the rest. There’s a minibus service for driving passengers and equipment back to their accommodation, but as they're in the village centre, walking (quite pleasant after your five hour journey from Gatwick), or using the resort buses, are easy. Best of all is the delightful welcome from Marie and Mimi as you enter the shop. Great service, great location.

Snowberry has brilliant equipment and service, highly trained staff, and a minibus service to ferry you home. Their range includes not just the four categories listed above but actually seven levels of skis, including their 'Budget Performance' which are more advanced skis than the basic budget ones but still at a low price, and two extra levels of top equipment: Expert and Test. Hence their claim to have a ski for every skier-type and the best range of children's skis in Val d'Isere! Go online for a booking form which you email to the shop quoting the YSE promotional code YSE14 for special YSE discounted prices, which are not shown on their comprehensive price list but which will apply when you pay in Val d'Isère. All the Premium equipment is 100% new, while the Economy and Budget ranges use re-conditioned equipment (one or two years old) from €37.50 for a pair of two-year old skis, and €12 for boots which aren't even that old, but which must be booked in advance. You can leave skis and boots with the shop overnight and just walk back to your chalet in your own shoes - particularly useful for Chez Savoy, Gnellets and La Moraine.

Opposite Juniper, Jasmine and Jacaranda, a small shop with similar equipment and the same range of prices as the bigger shops, and friendly service. No minibus needed as you can just walk back to those chalets, with the advantage that any changes you want to make during the week take place close to home.
